Boys’ Varsity Basketball Head Coach nominated by peer coaches for the award
Brian Baudinet, Assistant Director of Admission and Head Coach of Boys’ Varsity Basketball, was recently named the NEPSAC Class B Coach of the Year. Baudinet received the title following two rounds of nominations and voting by his peer coaches. Canterbury School is incredibly excited to celebrate his success.
With Coach Baudinet’s leadership, the team has advanced to the Class B tournament during both the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons. In his two seasons with the Saints, the team has compiled a 41-12 overall record, including a 15-3 record against Tri-State League opponents and a 19-3 mark against NEPSAC Class B competition.
In 2018-19, Brian guided the Saints to a 21-6 record, advancing the team to the postseason in the Class B Championship game. In 2017-18, the team finished with a record of 20-6 and advanced to the Class B Semifinals. The team also won the Tri-State League Championship for just the third time in school history.
During Brian’s first season, three players were named to the Class B All-League Team. This year, two players were voted again to the All-League Team.
“Even with our starting lineup having graduated, I thought we could be as good as last year,” he noted upon reflection of the season. “But then once we got into our practice and playing rhythm, I realized we could find even more success.” The team won 12 consecutive games in January and February of their season and headed into the post-season tournament as the #1 Class B seed.
As a coach, Brian expects that the team commits themselves to championship standards and three core values—unselfish, tough, committed—in everything they do. “Players should exemplify these values as athletes as well as members of our community. What you do off the court has an equal impact.”
The team graduates four students this year. Bryan Powell committed to Pace University, NY. Joe Hoch will attend Trinity College, CT, where he will play basketball for the Bantams. Jack Griebel is headed to Lafayette College, PA, and Eric Massing returns to his home country of Germany to attend university and play basketball for his local pro team.
Next year, Brian is already looking forward to the talented group of returners on the team. “We have a bunch of guys who are already leaders on the team who got consistent minutes for us this season,” he says. “I am excited to get going—if anything, it’s just tough that the start is just so far away.”
