Canterbury School finally has a dance club! On Monday, April 2, ten girls attended the first ever Canterbury School Dance Club meeting. It met in the Wrestling Center of the NAF.
Cadence Trach ‘20 and Kayla Jendras ‘20 started the club because they both wanted to create another outlet where students could express themselves. Both Cadence and Kayla have been dancing since they were two years old.
“Dancing has always been my release outlet. Every time I dance, I just get this indescribable feeling that has linked me to this performing arts style for 12 years now,” said Cadence.
“Personally, dance has allowed us to be ourselves and we know others feel the same way,” said Kayla.
Both girls believed that bringing dance into the Canterbury community would be a fun extracurricular activity that would allow people of all skill levels to participate, as well as make the school more well rounded in terms of the performing arts programs.
Club members started with warm ups and a combination of stretches instructed by Cadence and Kayla, followed by exercises, and then instructions on the first dance routine.
“Tonight was really just about having fun, being able to let yourself loose, and find your inner dancer,” said Kayla.
High school, especially junior year, can get really tough. Cadence and Kayla wanted to create a space of complete freedom – where daily stress can be relieved in a positive and creative way.
“Tonight was really fun,”said Nikki DeCola ‘19. “It allowed me to get loose and just forget about my responsibilities for a minute.”
“It was such a lively and care-free environment,” agreed Maliyah Perkins ‘20.
All members of the Canterbury community are welcome to participate in this club: male, female, and even faculty, no matter your dance skill level.
“This will be a safe place for people to express themselves and be free of judgment,” said Kayla.
“I was a little scared to do this at first, but once we started my body just went with it and I ended up having a really fun night,” said Christina El-Fanek ‘21.
They are hoping to meet once a week and cover a variety of different genres of dance, including contemporary, jazz, hip-hop, and ballet.
“Our goal is that this will provide club members with a new outlet to express themselves in a way that they might not have been able to before,” said Cadance.
Thank you Cadence and Kayla for introducing this to the community.
