Why did you choose to come to the U.S?

Because I am interested in American culture.

What do you like least/most about the U.S?

I like the environment here. it’s not crowded and I like the weather.

What do you miss the most about your home country?

I miss the food a lot, like hotpot (consists of a simmering metal pot of stock at the center of the dining table), snacks, fried rice and so on.

What is the biggest challenge you find at Canterbury?

In China, doing sports is not mandatory, so when I came here, it’s hard to get used to the daily practices and weekly games. Also, I played squash last year which is a completely new sport for me.

What is the one thing you would like other students to know about your country?

There are lots of types of food in China. I hope more people can come and try it!

What are the biggest differences you see between the school experience here and the school experience in Shanghai?

In China, the average class size is about 40, so it’s really huge compared to here. And we don’t have the same kind of work – like writing essays, researching or working on projects. Instead, we have many tests.

Are there any erroneous stereotypes or assumptions about your home culture you need to clarify?

Not all Chinese look the same and not all Chinese girls had bangs in their childhood.

What is the general perception of the U.S in your home country?

Luxuries are cheap, the food portions are always large and people are strong (physically).
