Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

By Megan Tracy

Salt to the Sea is an ingenious novel about the true historical events of World War II and the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff. Sepetys carefully weaves the stories of four different characters all from different homelands together. The perspectives of Florian, Joana, Emilia, and Alfred shine light for the readers to understand different aspects of World War II.

Although each of the four main characters have their differences, all their paths converge when they board a ship that they hope will offer safety. Whether it is the love for a child, for a lover, for a friend, for family, or for a homeland, all types of love lead these characters to board the Wilhelm Gustloff.

The characters presented in this book are characters the reader can relate to on some level whether it involves losing someone one loves, or leaving a homeland.

This book keeps the reader engaged from the first chapter to the last. The book perfectly combines romance, suspense, sacrifice, sadness, and humor into one amazing story.

Having read another one of Ruta Sepetys’ books on World War II in the past, when I learned that Sepetys’ new World War II book was the all school read I was thrilled.

Once I picked up this book, I could not put it down. This book left a soft spot in my heart for the suffering many endured during World War II. I was sincerely impressed with this novel and I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good romance, thrill, or wants to learn more insight on aspects of World War II.
