Girls’ Varsity Soccer Season

Interview with Captain Kenzi Pfiefer ‘17

Captain Kenzi Pfiefer termed this fall a “rebuilding year” for girls’ varsity soccer. However, she felt that the team achieved tremendous improvement throughout a season highlighted by three big victories.

These improvements were facilitated by two new coaches, assistant Ms. Newman and head coach Mr. Hargrove.  Pfeifer was pleased that Hargrove instituted “quality drills and fun games” that emphasized ball skills and communication. Hargrove also motivated his players to “just play their game” and establish their physicality on their opponents.

Though the team did not always achieve the results they wanted, new faces and seasoned veterans put in many great performances. Leading scorer Pfiefer ’17 was joined by fellow four-year varsity players Sam Armour and Saraah Cardwell.

Despite just beginning her soccer career as a junior, senior keeper Kara Santoro made several game-saving stops on many occasions. Meanwhile, Bella Cotier ‘20 and Gabby Vitelli ‘18 gained recognition for consistently leading a back line that was usually under significant duress.

This year’s graduating class obviously contained a special player, as Pfiefer will continue her soccer career at Misericordia University.

As she leaves Canterbury, Pfiefer is optimistic about the prospects of future Saints teams. She believes that the younger players “were able to learn from the seniors…and gain a good skill set” that will serve them well in the years to come.

Perhaps the true success that results from this team’s hard work will not be purely measured by this season, but by the groundwork laid for the accomplishments of future Saint squads.
